New Senate appointee from Hawaii is Jewish
Hawaii’s new junior Senator is Brian Emanuel Schatz (pronounced “shootz”). Schatz, 40, replaced Senator Daniel Inouye, who died last week. Born in Michigan, he is a twin and has lived in Hawaii most of his life. According to news reports, Schatz (D-HI), the current Lt. Governor of Hawaii, is Jewish and will serve until a special election in 2014. With his appointment Schatz is one of 11 senators in the 113th Congress who identify themselves as Jewish, all but one of whom are Democrats. That number is down one from the previous year.
Schatz took the oath of office yesterday in a brief ceremony in the chambers of the U.S. Senate, administered by Vice-President Joseph Biden, the president pro tempore of the Senate.
Schatz is the former chairman of the state’s Democratic Party and led the election campaign of Barack Obama for president there in 2008. He is the former CEO of Helping Hands Hawaii, a social services provider.
