ANITA THOMASON ARCANA, affectionately known as “Bitsy” to all that loved and knew her, died peacefully with her family at her side on Sunday, April 28, 2019. She was 87 years old.
Born Mary Anita Thomason in Atlanta, GA., she graduated from the Academy of Sacred Heart High School there before enrolling and graduating from the Touro School of Nursing. She worked for many years as an electrocardiogram technician in addition to other roles within Touro Infirmary including that as a surgical nurse.
As a housewife, she raised her three children instilling a strong sense of education, community and adventure. She had numerous hobbies before various illnesses prohibited her from continuing them including gardening, cooking, needlepoint, writing, decorating and painting. She also loved shopping and was always impeccably dressed.
Later in her life before her retirement, she worked as an administrator for Fitzgerald’s Advertising Agency, noted for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. A voracious reader, she continually had three novels at her side at one time – her favorites being historical novels.
Up until three weeks ago, she was in constant contact with her favorite librarians who sent her books they knew she would enjoy. She was lifelong member of the New Orleans Chapter of Hadassah, a current member of Beth Israel Synagogue where she served in their Sisterhood for many years and a former member of the Krewe of Iris. She also enjoyed traveling the world collecting treasures.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Joseph Arcana; her three children, Michael Barnett (Karen), Adam Barnett and Elisa Barnett and her brother Herndon “Chuck” Thomason (Cathy).
Private graveside services for the family were held in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Congregation Beth Israel, 4004 W. Esplanade Avenue, Metairie, LA 70002 and the Jefferson Parish Library system.
