JOSEPH “JOE” GURIEVSKY, a retired businessman, passed away peacefully on Sunday November 17, 2019 at the age of 92.
A native of New Orleans, he graduated from Fortier High School and attended Loyola University in New Orleans for two years on a basketball scholarship. While at Loyola, his team won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship in 1945 during his freshman year, even though they were significant underdogs. After his sophomore year, he was drafted in the military and spent two years in the Army Air Corps stationed in the Pacific.
Gurievsky always maintained he had been very lucky for had he been drafted a year earlier, he might well have seen action in the Pacific theater or, had he been selected a few years later, he might have been sent to fight in Korea. While in the service, he was selected to play on the Army basketball team that eventually won the Pacific Area Championship.
After returning home, Gurievsky opened a business and was married for more than 69 years to his wife, Beryl Rusakof Gurievsky, who predeceased him by two weeks.
He is survived by his children Evelynn Freed (Michael), Mark Gurievsky, Barry Gurievsky (Darlene) and David Gurievsky (Lisa); his brother, Dr. Harry Garvin; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in Chevra Thilim Memorial Park, 5000 Iberville St., officiated by Rabbi Deborah Silver. Arrangements were by Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home of Metairie.
Memorial donations in his name can be made to the Greater New Orleans Chapter of Hadassah, New Orleans Chapter, c/o Mrs. Lee Blotner 3612 N. Labarre Road Metairie LA 70002-1813.
