Shir Chadash to offer day-long Chanukah celebration on Dec. 5

Shir Chadash Conservative Congregation has announced plans for a full day of Chanukah-related activities on Sunday, December 5, which corresponds to the seventh day of the eight-day holiday.

The day begins at 9:00 a.m. with “Superhero” Shul School and programs designed for the younger set. All children are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite superhero as a way of honoring the ancient Maccabees. Each class will have its own, age-appropriate programming.

All students will be treated to an audience with special guest, Rabbi Michael Cohen. Programs are slated to end at 11:30 a.m. (There is no Saints game that Sunday.)

Shir Chadash, Congregation Beth Israel and the Jewish Community Day School (JCDS) will host a special giveaway of  New Orleans-themed sufganyot – Café du Monde  beignets – in the parking lot it shares with the Goldring-Woldenberg Campus which houses the JCDS and the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans. The three sponsoring organizations are renting a truck from Café du Monde and distributing the Chanukah treats from 11:30 – 12:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, at the same time as the children’s program at Shir Chadash, the Men’s Club will hold a minyan with special guest, Rabbi Elliot Dorff. The minyan starts a 9:15 a.m. and the rabbi will join via Zoom at 10:30 a.m. on the topic: “Masorti Maccabees: Fighting for Israel in Our Own Time.” Those who wish to join the conversation via Zoom should contact the synagogue office for link information.

Finally, an evening program for adults will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the social hall. The Men’s Club and the Young Adults at Shir Chadash (YAS) will gather for a night of gambling, refreshment and prizes. The congregation will also sponsor its First Annual Ugly Sweater Contest in addition to a traditional Poker Night. First- and second-place winners of the contest receive gift cards to Total Wine Warehouse.

More games will be held on Thursday, December 9. Word games such as Scrabble, Banana Grams and Boggle will be featured from 7:30-9:30 pm. Appetizers and drinks will be served, but the exact location is to be determined.
