Two major events in the New Orleans Jewish world happen this weekend: the installation of Rabbi David Gerber at Congregation Gates of Prayer and the celebration of Sharon Pollin as the head of school at the Jewish Community Day School gala on Sunday evening.
The installation of Rabbi Gerber gets underway at 8:00 p.m. Friday night with CCJN reporter Anna Brunini on site capturing images. The event is open to the public and will include remarks by Emeritus Rabbi Robert Loewy and a speech to be delivered by business consultant Stuart Briefer.
A celebratory Oneg Shabbat will follow the services tonight. Saturday services will feature a joint Torah study opportunity at 9:15 a.m.with Pastor Kennis Russell to be followed by a 10:30 a.m. service at which the pastor will participate with CGOP cantorial soloist Victoria Cohen May in describing how the Psalms have been interpreted musically .
A kiddush luncheon will follow the Saturday service.
The Jewish Community Day School will honor its soon-to-be retiring head of school, Sharon Pollin at its annual gala on Sunday, November 18. Pollin, who recently received her doctorate, will be honored at the Butterfly Ball being held at the revised time of 7:00 till 9:00 p.m at the Goldring-Woldenberg campus at 3737 West Esplanade Avenue. The time change was due to a change in the kickoff for the New Orleans Saints game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
CCJN reporter Nicholas Hamburger will be on hand at the event to also capture images and file a story.
