Louis Moreau Institute hosts two classical concerts

The Louis Moreau Institute for New Music Performance, a classical concert arts organization, hosts the first of two concerts tonight with “American Extremes” at the Marigny Opera House, 725 St. Ferdinand Street, at 7:30 p.m.

“American Extremes” features Steve Reich’s “Different Trains,” the New Orleans premiere of Mario Davidovsky’s “Quartetto No. 3,” Esa-Pekka Salonen’s “Concert Étude for Horn in F,” Igor Stravinsky’s “Three Pieces for String Quartet” and an improvisation based off “Talkin’ ‘Bout New Orleans.”

The compositions will be performed by The Louies – the  2017 ensemble of artists including The Ulysses Quartet members Christina Bouey, violin, Rhiannon Banerdt, violin, Colin Brookes, viola, and Grace Ho, cello along with Adrian Blanco on piano and Russell Rybicki on horn.

The institute takes its name from the first and middle names of America’s first native-born composer, Louis Morreau Gottchalk, who was a native of New Orleans.

Tickets begin at $10.00 for students and seniors. Regular admission is $20.00

The second concert will be held at the Dixon Hall complex, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21 and is titled “Hungarian Melodies.”

The Louies will perform Béla Bartók’s groundbreaking “String Quartet No. 4,” György Ligeti’s expressive “Trio for Horn, Violin, and Piano,” and offer a repeat performance based off “Talkin’ ‘Bout New Orleans.”

Presented in part by the Newcomb School of Music at Tulane University, admission to this concert is free.
