Antiques store owner Henry Granet is dead at 87
HENRY GRANET, a retired antiques store owner, passed away quietly on January 4, 2021 at the Poydras Home after a long battle with cancer.
He is survived by his sister, Nicole Friedlander (Dr. Miles).
Granet was born in Paris, France, but emigrated in late 1939 with his parents and his sister prior to the Nazi occupation. After a short time in Florida, he and his family settled in New Orleans. Henry graduated from Isidore Newman High School and Tulane University.
He then served honorably in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. Of his many life accomplishments, he was proud to serve at the Strategic Air Command. His most challenging memory of training was at “Winter survival school”. What was true of Henry’s resilience, he remembered it as being “cold.”
After serving in the Air Force, Henry returned home to New Orleans to join members in running the family business, the French Antique Shop. In his work with the business, he was often called upon to purchase antiques in Italy and France family business (the French Antique Shop). He worked alongside his parents and his sister for many years traveling to France and Italy buying antiques. Hobbies were intertwined with this work and always involved family and friends. He was an avid outdoor sportsman, enjoying fishing trips with his father. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, and relaxing with his friends. His memories were entwined in New Orleans landmarks such as Ruth’s Chris on Broad and boating on Lake Pontchartrain.
After the passing of his parents, Henry carried on the family business alongside his sister (Nicole) and nephew (Marc) establishing it as one of the foremost collections of French antique furniture and chandeliers in the country. The family would like to thank Larry Matthews (who has been at Henry’s side for years), as well as the nurses and staff of the Poydras Home who allowed Henry to live with dignity and ultimately peace during the last years of his life. A small family graveside service will be performed, laying Henry at rest next to his parents. This will be followed by a future Memorial after covid has passed.
Donations in Henry’s honor can be given to Gates of Prayer Synagogue.
