The New Orleans Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) has announced the recipient of the 2012 Harold G. Salmon Award as Ina Weber Davis. Davis, a former president of NCJW from 2007-2010, had been credited with reinvigorating the organization following the devastation associated with the Hurricane Katrina-related flooding. Davis has been a highly visible member of the organization, serving to helping to organize political debates and forums for several elections as well as to connect members to the grassroots efforts of Women of the Storm that advocated for rebuilding the City of New Orleans following the widespread destruction in 2005. She is the current chair of both the Promote the Vote and Protect the Vote campaigns being run by NCJW and has served on several other committees including the selection committee and chair for the group’s annual Hannah G. Solomon Memorial Award.
Davis, a native of Philadelphia arrived in New Orleans with her husband in 1997. A a former teacher with three young sons, she began to volunteer as a tutor, eventually chairing the NCJW’s tutoring program as well as its Book Partners program.
The award is named for Salmon, a tireless supporter of the NCJW, and is given to NCJW members whose conduct, dedication and spirit of volunteerism has singled them out for special consideration. Salmon was a tireless supporter of the NCJW and the award was instituted in his memory several years ago.
The award will be presented at the NCJW Opening Luncheon, being held on September 10 at the Audubon Park Golf Club Café, 6500 Magazine Street, at 11:30 a.m. There will be a kosher-style lunch and an open wine bar for the event. Tickets cost $45 for general admisson for older adults, while tickets for those 36-years-old and younger are $36.
