Henry Galler, Shoah survivor, well-known tailor, passes away in Dallas
Henry Galler, a Holocaust survivor who was alternatively known as Mr. Henry the Tailor, but who has not lived in New Orleans since evacuating for Hurricane Katrina in 2005, died earlier today.
Galler, 91, was one of the last of a rare breed of highly regarded Jewish tailors who worked on South Rampart Street and other shops in the former Dryades shopping district in or near the Central Business District. Galler’s shop was located on Jackson Avenue just a few blocks away from the historically important Garden District.
He had sold his tailor shop shortly before Hurricane Katrina made landfall in 2005 and left the city with his wife of almost 60 years, Eva, also a Holocaust survivor. Galler never returned to New Orleans, especially after his wife expired in January of 2006.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am tomorrow, October 15, at the Sparkman-Hillcrest Chapel, 7405 West Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX with burial to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Rabbi Ari Perl of Congregation Shaare Tefilah will officiate. Survivors include spouses Dr. Janina Galler and Dr. Burton Rabinowitz of Boston; Marilynn (David) Wohlstadter of Dallas; spouses Linda Galler and Murray Singer of Port Washington, N.Y and eight grandchildren.
Donations are suggested to “Facing History and Ourselves” or to the United States Holocaust Museum.
