In the Orthodox world, the Selichot service the weekend before Rosh Hashanah occurs with the reciting of Psalms occurs and visits to loved ones final resting places ocurs. In the Reform world, there is a similar tradition of visiting the graves of loved ones shortly after Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

The Kever Avot Ceremony, or Cemetery Pilgrimage, is a chance to recite memorial prayers first as a community and then to visit the final resting places of individuals and family loved ones and friends.

Rabbi Daniel Sherman of Temple Sinai and Rabbi Katie Baum of Touro Synagogue will lead this year’s joint Kever Avot service on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 11:30 a.m., as well as any members of the community who have loved ones or friends interred there. Everyone is invited to gather at the three Hebrew Rest Cemeteries in Gentilly for this moving opportunity on Sunday, October 6 at 11:30 a.m. The service will be jointly conducted by Rabbis Katie Bauman and Daniel Sherman.
