Touro Synagogue to kickoff ‘Lifting the Sky’ campaign on Succot
Touro Synagogue will combine the celebration of Succot with the kickoff for a new capital campaign – Lifting the Sky – to improve its historic facilities on St. Charles Avenue in the early evening hours of Sunday, Oct. 9. The date corresponds to the first night of Succot, which officially starts at sundown. The event will begin at 5:00 p.m. and continue till 7:00 p.m.
Although short presentations will be made during the event about the campaign, no contributions will be solicited at that time. The campiagn is intended to raise funds for a new roof and other amenities for the building that houses the classrooms and administrative offices at the Reform synagogue. Part of the event will take place within the succah located in the courtyard between the main sanctuary and the social hall.
Just as strangers are invited into the succah, Senior Rabbi Katie Bauman stated that the theme of the holiday fits perfectly with the kickoff of the campaign.
“Succot is about shelter, hospitality, welcome, and sustainability, and those are the values that infuse our Lifting the Sky campaign. As we give thanks on Sunday evening for the ways that the world shelters us and we shelter each other and reflect on our connection to our surroundings, we will also be toasting the future of Touro Synagogue in which we embody and actualize those ideas.”
The campaign will raise funds for the roofs, the HVAC systems and other amenities, she indicated
Improving this home will build on Touro’s legacy and prepare us for our bicentennial, only a few years away,” the rabbi noted.
