In Bethlehem speech, Pope calls for end to conflict

(JTA) — In his first visit to the region since becoming pope, Pope Francis referred to the “state of Palestine” and called for an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

After visiting Jordan on Saturday, the pope held a mass Sunday at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the traditional site of Jesus’ birth. He will travel to Israel later in the day.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Pope Francis has landed in Israel for a two-day visit.

The pope arrived Sunday afternoon at Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion Airport via a helicopter ride from Bethlehem, where he spent the morning. Francis will depart Israel on Monday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres greeted the pope upon arrival, accompanied by a band playing “Jerusalem of Gold.”

Death toll from Brussels shooting rises to 4

(JTA) — An employee of the Jewish museum of Brussels died of injuries he sustained in the shooting there, bringing the death toll to four people.

The fourth fatality from Saturday afternoon’s shooting passed away later Saturday night, the Benelux broadcaster RTL reported on its website.

Depaul students approve Israel divestment in referendum

(JTA) — DePaul University’s student body voted in a referendum to approve a divestment resolution targeting Israel.

The student government ballot initiative passed with 54.2 percent of the vote, with 45.8 against, The DePaulia student newspaper reported Friday.

A total of 2,908 votes were cast by students at the Chicago Catholic university.
