Retired furniture store owner, David Levin dies
DAVID H. LEVIN, a retired furniture store owner, died Thursday, November 8 at a hospice in Hammond. He was 85 years of age. With his brother-in-law, Levin ran the L and D Furniture Store for decades.
An avid sportsman and bowler, Levin was an active member of B’nai Brith, with whose bowling league he played for many years. Levin also bowled for several other mixed leagues and was a sports enthusiast and coach for his children’s sports teams. A member of the former Congregation Chevra Thilim, Levin also served as a past worshipful master of Sam B. Dryfuse Masonic Lodge # 396, F & A.M. A New Orleans native, Levin graduated from S. J. Peters Senior High School before entering the business world. He was a longtime supporter of the New Orleans Saints and a member of the Krewe of Thoth for many years.
Following closure of his retail store, Levin also worked for a time at the Lakeside Shopping Center’s Swensen’s Ice Cream outlet, dispensing his most favorite of foodstuffs.
Levin is survived by sons Gerald (Susan) and Richard and daughter Leslie (Butch) Carrone, sister Doris Davis and four grandchildren
Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, November 11, at the Chevra Thilim Cemetery, 4824 Canal Street with Rabbi Robert Loewy officiating.
