Adele Karp Cahn expires at 100
ADELE KARP CAHN, a local resident for almost a century, passed away on the morning of March 4, 2018 at the age of 100 years.
She was predeceased by her husband Emile “Sleepy” Cahn and her son Mike E. Cahn. She is survived by her sister Louise Karp Essrig and three grandchildren.
Born in Montgomery, Alabama, she was raised as a young child at the Jewish Children’s Home. Because she was always grateful for the quality care and education that was given her through the institution, she became devoted to the work of Jewish Children’s Regional Service that formerly ran the home as well as Jewish Family Service. Her life’s priority was to ensure that children and families were helped in the same way as she was.
Cahn was also responsible for maintaining senior programs through the Jewish Family Service, one of which allowed all seniors to obtain cab vouchers.
She was vitally interested in everything going on in the world around her. She possessed a remarkable memory and had almost total recall of all events down to the most minute details. This talent she possessed until the end of her long life.
A private graveside ceremony was held at Hebrew Rest Cemetery on March 5, 2018. It was officiated by Rabbi Robert Loewy of Congregation Gates of Prayer.
Memorial donations are suggested to Jewish Children’s Regional Service, 3500 N. Causeway Blvd, Suite 1120, Metairie, La. 70002 or Jewish Family Service of Greater New Orleans, 3300 West Esplanade, Suite 603, Metairie, La. 70002. Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home of Metairie was in charge of arrangements.
