Spiritual Sparks: The Gift of Light
Illumination reveals clarity and beauty. Darkness recedes when light enters.
History is full of stories of people who were fired, only later to flourish. Walt Disney was fired as a cartoonist for “lacking imagination and good ideas.”
In hindsight, such moments feel almost laughable. But at the time, they were experienced as failure, rejection and darkness. What changed wasn’t the circumstances themselves, but the spiritual lens through which their lives were viewed.
This week, we explore The Gift of Light, and what it allows our soul to see.

Light is About Seeing, Not Changing Reality
What does it mean to “see the light”? We often assume light changes what’s around us, but it doesn’t rearrange the furniture or alter the room.
Light doesn’t change reality; it reveals it. The room is the same whether the lamp is on or off; only our perception changes.
One can live with eyes wide open and still miss what truly matters. Light offers clarity -- the ability to notice a loved one’s presence, or to see the transcendent opportunity within a challenge rather than only an obstacle.
A Small Light Can Carry Enormous Power
Darkness feels overwhelming, but proves to be illusory. A single flame can illuminate a large room or cavern, far beyond what its size would suggest.
Until light appears, darkness looks foreboding. The same is true when circumstances seem bleak, a hidden spark often remains. When a violin string snapped during Itzhak Perlman’s performance, he finished the concerto on three strings.
Setbacks don’t extinguish our light; they invite us to use it differently.
Light Takes Many Forms, But Its Greatest Power Is Unity
Wisdom is light. Compassion is light. Justice is light. Knowledge is light. Music is light. Alone, they flicker. Together, they blaze.
When individual lights are unified rather than competing, they become far greater than their sum. A single candle illuminates modestly, but candles joined together in a candelabra radiate far more powerfully.
When unity gives each light direction and purpose, darkness doesn’t stand a chance.

❓1 Question
What part of your life might look different if you saw it in a new light?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometimes nothing about our circumstances changes.
What changes is the light by which we see them.
Until next time,
May you be blessed with greater light, helping you see life with clarity and beauty.
Rabbi Ze'ev Smason
P.S. Have you noticed a moment when your light helped someone else see more clearly? I’d love to hear about that experience.
