Boutté headlines 21st Jazz Fest Shabbat

John Boutté, a featured performer on the HBO series “Treme,” headlined the 24th annual Jazz Fest Shabbat held at Touro Synagogue on Friday, April 27.

Attendees at the historic St. Charles Avenue sanctuary filled most every seat, enjoying a memorable night of prayer and revelry that marked the first weekend of the 2012 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Israeli judoka heading to London

Arik Ze’evi, the Israeli bronze medal winner at the 2004 Summer Olympics, is heading to the 2012 summer games after he won the gold medal at the European Judo Championships yesterday in Chelyabinsk, Russia. This marks the fourth time the 35-year-old has won a European gold medal and gives him an 8 in the world judo rankings. He is the oldest gold judo champion on record.

Vodka Company To Remove Offensive Billboards

Wodka Vodka released an announcement via its Twitter feed that the company had decided to remove its controversial holiday billboards.  The billboards were displayed in several New York area locations containing a large text tagline, “CHRISTMAS QUALITY, HANUKKAH PRICING.”  Above the large text contained an image of two dogs– one with a yarmulke and the other with a Santa Claus hat.

Gilad Shalit undergoes surgery

Gilad Shalit is spending his second weekend of freedom as a patient at the Rambam Hospital in Haifa.  According to reports, Shalit sustained damage to his hand during his 2006 abduction.  Seven pieces of embedded shrapnel were removed during his surgery on Friday.  Reportedly, his doctors are optimistic the surgery was a success.
